40D and 44B hold the same cup volume as 42C with a tighter or looser band. If the band of a 42C rides up, try 40D; if it digs in, try 44B.
Larger bands are widely produced, but the stretch of the band matters more than anywhere else in the range: fabrics that measure right but stretch loose lose their support within months. Fasten a new bra on the loosest hook and expect to tighten over its life. Cups on large bands are often cut shallow — if you get gaping with a correct band, try one cup down before changing band.

What is 42C in European sizing?
A 42C corresponds to 95C in European sizing and 110C in French/Spanish sizing. The cup volume is identical — only the band numbering changes between systems.
Is 42C big or small?
It is a larger band size, carried by most brands' extended ranges. Cup letters mean nothing alone: a cup only has a volume relative to its band, which is why 40D and 44B hold exactly the same volume as 42C.
My 42C doesn't fit — what should I try?
If the band rides up or feels loose, go to 40D. If the band digs in while the cup is fine, go to 44B. If the cup overflows, try one cup up in the same band; if it wrinkles empty, one cup down. Two minutes with the calculator confirms it.
